Description
This No Sew Cardinal Wall Hanging Kit is 10 by 10 inches with white grosgrain ribbon to lace through holes around the perimeter using a plastic needle. The wall-hanging front-facing fabric has a music sheet background with scattered red Cardinal birds sitting on holly branches with red berries and green leaves. On the center of the front-facing fabric is a white felt heart that has a smaller red flannel heart on top of it. Toward the bottom right and left of the facing two wooden tags will be affixed with Christmas sentiments like Peace, Joy, Believe, or Merry, and hanging from the bottom center will be a black and red buffalo check wooden Christmas ornament shape with another Christmas sentiment. The backing of the wall hanging is made with a thick red felt that comes attached to the cotton facing. A shorter white grosgrain ribbon is provided to lace through two holes along the top left and right sides then brought together into the center to tie into a ribbon and create a center loop for hanging on the wall.
This can be made as a simple complexity project by performing the standard running stitch as described below in section A, or can be made a little more challenging by performing a double-laced stitch as described in section B .
Section A instructions: To make the simple complexity project, you will perform the running stitch method around the four sides of the wall hanging. To do this, you will lace one of the white ribbon strands through the eye of the plastic needle (all included with the kit) and mimic the running stitch by sliding the plastic needle and ribbon top-down through a corner hole leaving about a 3-inch tail on top, then lace up and down through the holes along one side until you reach the next to the last hole from the corner. At the next to the last hole from the corner, you will remove the ribbon from the plastic needle, and check to see if the ribbon tails on the far left and far right are about even. If the tails are not even, pull the ribbon stitches toward the shorter side to even the tails on both ends on top of the fabric. Then repeat lacing with new ribbon strands for the remaining three sides in the same way. When complete, you will tie double-knotted bows in all four corners with the two adjacent ribbon tails on top of the fabric. If you want to make sure the bows do not come untied, you can put a bit of glue at the center of the tied bow.
Section B instructions: To make the simple moderate complexity project, you will perform the running stitch method around the four sides of the wall hanging and then lace under these stitches to create a double-laced stitching.
Next, you will use four more white ribbon strands to lace over and under the running stitches just created on each side.
- Lace one of the white ribbon strands through the eye of your plastic needle.
- Starting in one of the four corners of the wall hanging, bring your plastic needle and ribbon bottom-up through the corner hole next to the other ribbon tail that was previously laced through.
- Pull the ribbon through until the tail is approximately the same length as the other ribbon tail previously laced through.
- Next, you will slide your plastic needle and ribbon underneath the adjacent running stitch with your needle staying on top of your fabric. Slide the needle and ribbon from the upper side of the stitch through to the lower side then lace through the next running stitch in the same way. Continue lacing under each stitch going from the upper to lower side of the stitches until you come to the next to the last hole from the corner. At the next to the last hole from the corner, put your plastic needle and ribbon top down through the hole leaving the tail on the bottom side.
- Repeat steps 1 – 4 to complete the double lacing for the remaining three sides.
- When complete, you will tie double-knotted bows in all four corners with the four adjacent ribbon tails. If you want to make sure the bows do not come untied, you can put a bit of glue at the center of the tied bow.
The two wooden tags with Christmas sentiments will be glued onto the bottom left and right corners on front of the wall hanging, and the wooden Christmas ornament will be hung from the bottom center on front of the wall hanging. The glue is not included with the kit. We recommend a fabric glue like Dritz Unique Stitch which can be ordered through Amazon or at other craft stores.
