Description

Custom made to order – call for current color and pattern options.  37″ x 37″ lap quilt kit with three rows of three 13″cotton fabric squares in your choice of pink and green floral squares combined with alternating vibrant pink or meadow green colored squares.  All fabric squares are bordered with the Mitsy Kit tactile ribbon which will guide stitching by touch for the perfect 3/8″ seam allowance, and packaged in appropriate sequence so that low vision or blind can put together without eyesight.

Backing and batting are also provided to complete the quilt.  Choose from pink or green solid cotton backing fabric and a cotton / polyester mid weight batting.  Once the quilt facing is pieced and sewn together, the tactile ribbon around the perimeter of the facing will be used to guide stitching by touch of the quilt facing to the backing and batting.

For those who wish to make a larger quilt, purchase four of these kits to make a 73″ x 73″ full size quilt – as seen in picture with four panels of four squares.

See accessories for sewing tools including large eye crewel needles and bow style threader, or complete sewing tool kit box.

Overview of steps to complete the quilt kit follow:

Step 1) Remove row one of the quilt kit from the first of the three notebook sleeves.

Step 2) Place squares right side up on table (tactile border facing table, not visible)

Step 3) Fold first square down over second square right sides together (note squares come attached with fastners but you should insert straight pins through top to align pieces together corner to corner)

Step 4) Hand stitch on wrong side of fabric, through fabric just under tactile guide, sewing first and second squares together from corner to corner.  When complete stitching remove fastners and pins.

Step 5) Fold second square down over third square right sides together, and repeat step 4.

Step 6) Remove the next row of the quilt kit from the next notebook sleeve of the three.

Step 7) Repeat steps 2 – 6 until you have completed stitching all three rows of your quilt kit.

Step 7b) Place row one on table right side up.

Step 7c) Place next unattached row on top of prior row with fabric right sides together and pin together along long side.  Sew the two rows together along long side with running stitch just under tactile border from end to end.

Step 7d) Place next unattached row on top of prior attached row in prior step and follow step 7c to complete attaching next row.  Continue this step until all rows are attached to complete the quilt top.

Step 8) Place your completed quilt top face to face with the backing fabric and the batting on the bottom (facing table).

Step 9) Pin the quilt top to the backing and batting with straight pins around the perimeter making sure that all three layers are aligned and secured before stitching.

Step 10) Place a 5 to 6 inch piece of masking tape on one border in middle of a quilt square on wrong side of the quilt top.  This designates where NOT to stitch so that you can turn the quilt right side out through this opening in later step.

Step 11) Begin stitching on wrong side of quilt top just under tactile border with small running stitch being careful to go through all three layers of fabric and batting.  Stitch all around perimeter until reach other side of tape.  Once stitched all around iron the wrong side of quilt top to flatten all seams.

Step 12) Turn quilt right side out by removing tape and pulling far corner of quilt through opening and continue to pull through until entirely turned right side out.  Gently poke corners out.  Iron top side of quilt once pulled through and fold under area left unstitched and pin seams together.  Blind stitch the remaining openings with thread similar in color to quilt top or use iron on fusible fabric tape between seam layers and iron to attach.

Step 13) You may either finish the quilt with ties in the center of each square using embroidery thread or you can make small quilting stitches in each square to secure the three layers and prevent shifting of batting when washed.  Using masking tape from corner to corner of each square will help provide a tactile stitch guide through center of each square.  You can do both diagonals to form an x stitching pattern across the squares.
