Help contain the spread of virus with our cotton community face mask that is ready to wear!  This finished mask has two soft fleece strips to hold securely in place.  One soft fleece strip holds the mask snuggly across your nose and cheeks and wraps around to the back of your head, and the other fleece strip can be tied to secure the bottom of the mask around the back of the neck.  A toggle button is cinched on fleece strip around the head that makes it adjustable for all head sizes – adults and youth!  These Face Masks come in a size that is suitable for most adults and is made to cover most of your face from under eyes, across cheeks, and under chin.  We can provide a smaller version that is about an inch narrower on face and has more pleats to make it cinch up more around chin.  If you prefer the smaller version please indicate in the Notes.

How effective is a face mask?

Masks are generally used to protect yourself and others from respiratory droplets, and with a rising number of asymptomatic COVID-19 cases, Favini said there’s no harm in wearing one while you’re out and about as long as it is homemade and not a medical mask, which should be reserved for health care professionals.

In order for a homemade mask to be effective, Favini said it must cover the nose and mouth since this is where respiratory droplets enter and exit. As for fabric recommendations, the thicker the better.

“In general, the thicker and more tightly woven the material is, the more protective it likely will be. We also have some reason to think that vacuum filters may be more effective in filtering the particles and might be a good middle layer between an inner and outer layer of fabric,” he said.
